Artsmark Gold Award
St Meriadoc CE Infant Academy has been awarded the Artsmark Gold Award, in recognition of its commitment to providing a strong cultural education for its students.
We are one of 100 schools nationally to have taken part in a pilot of the Arts Council’s Artsmark Award scheme. The Artsmark Award has helped the Arts Council and schools to ensure more children and young people have access to high quality arts and culture.
As part of its work on the Artsmark scheme, we sent members of staff to Sri Lanka to observe how art is taught there, as it is of such a high standard. The staff returned with examples of art work and with exciting ideas and techniques for how best to teach art in their school. Teachers have also been working with artists in the UK to further develop their skills and confidence and the children are starting to produce some exceptional art work, which is displayed around the communal areas of the school.
Natasha Stephens, Year 1 teacher, said: ‘I feel more confident to teach art and the children have become more confident with their drawings. They explore and use their imagination much more once they have mastered the basic drawing skills’.
Below is a slideshow of artwork produced by the children.
